It’s been 8 years since the last Metallica studio album (2008’s Death Magnetic), and over twice that length of time since I bought one of their records. The last Metallica release I paid to listen to was 1996’s controversial Load album. (more…)
Doom-rock legend Wino has put together a new line up of his classic band The Obsessed, with Spirit Caravan bassist Dave Sherman and drummer Brian Costantino. The band have signed to Relapse Records and are currently touring the USA.
They have released this new demo track as a teaser of what’s to come. I think we’re in for a treat when the finished article arrives!
“Life’s a bitch and then you die!”
NWOBHM veterans Vardis originally called it a day in 1986 before reforming in 2014. This album comes in the wake of the tragic death of their bass player Terry Horbury last year. Horbury had been with the band on and off since the early 1980’s and is replaced by Martin Connolly (ex- Rick Wakeman, Paul Fox). The cover art was painted by legendary horror artists Graham Humphries (Evil Dead, Death Waltz Recording Company) and features the band as disembodied heads (with red eyes of course) and Horbury is depicted, which serves as a fitting tribute to him. “People reject us. They will never know the answer to the question that we carry in our hearts.”
The Vision is the debut album from these Italian blues-doom rockers. The album is the follow-up to last year’s Black Magic Man EP, and offers nine tracks of smoky, classic blues rock with occult-themed lyrics. Singer Virginia Monti delivers said lyrics in a suitably witchy style, and manages to sound like she means it. That’s because she does! (more…)
Sweden’s Goatess released their debut LP in 2013 and came to my attention mainly via their singer (Lord Vicar and ex-Count Raven and Terra Firma frontman Chritus Linderson). Their music is a cross between stoner rock and doom with plenty of psychedelia thrown in for good measure. (more…)
Birmingham’s Quartz, were a hard rock/heavy metal band who counted long-running Black Sabbath keyboard player Geoff Nicholls among their founding members. Formed in 1974 under the less than metal name of Bandy Legs, the band played club gigs and released a single (‘Bet You Can’t Dance’) for Jet records in 1976 before changing their name to Quartz (sounds a lot cooler doesn’t it?).
“Your Pain is her pleasure.”
Paz De La Huerta (Choke, Boardwalk Empire) is the eponymous nurse in this erotic horror revenge movie. She plays Abby Russell, a dedicated and extremely professional nurse in a busy city hospital by day and a brutal killer by night. (more…)
Here’s the video for new single ‘Speed of Light,’ from my all-time favourite band, IRON MAIDEN. The video sees the band’s mascot (Eddie the ‘Ed) playing through the evolution of video games from the early ’80’s right up to the modern 3D era, with the graphics getting better each time. Great stuff!
Their new album The Book of Souls is out next month. I can’t wait to check it out.
High on Fire are back with their seventh studio album, and I’m pleased to say that the band are definitely not mellowing with age. Luminiferous is nine tracks of the heavy rock, doom and thrash metal hybrid that Matt Pike and co. have spent the past fifteen years perfecting. Equal parts early Celtic Frost, Slayer and Motorhead, with just right amount of Venom and a healthy pinch of Wino, shoved in a blender and then set alight. That best describes the sound of High on Fire, and though it hardly seems possible, the new album takes things up another notch from their previous effort (2012’s De Vermis Mysteriis). (more…)
“A rockin’ collaboration of American and Italian heavy rock musicians.”
Sonic Wolves are the new new band formed by Kayt Vigil – bass & vocals (ex-Hounds of Hasselvander, Pentagram and Hatchetface), Vita – drums (Ufomammut) and Stefano Tocci – guitar (ex-Incoming Cerebral Overdrive, Deaf Eyes). Wolfwitch is their debut demo. It was recorded, mixed and mastered by their guitarist Stefano Tocci at Ampire Studio in Pistoia, Tuscany, Italy, between December 2014 and April 2015. (more…)
